Forming Curves

After spending a good bit of time forging out those long rods of silver, it gave me great satisfaction to finally put some shape into those poker straight lengths!

All of the form was put in by bending the rod by hand over a gently curved stake – very gradually bit by bit, making sure to avoid any kinks. Think I got some lovely curves…

Busy forging silver rods today, which will eventually become part of my new piece… So far she’s only tapered out from 410mm to 515mm – and she’s a long way to go yet!

Introducing Sarah Young

As most of you know, on the 10th of September I married my wonderful partner David here in our home village of Wighill. Following my marriage I have now changed my name to Mrs Sarah Young but I will continue to exhibit work and trade under the name of Sarah Denny - Designer Silversmith.

Next… Christmas Smithing
On returning from honeymoon, it’s taken a little while longer than expected to get back into the swing of things!! With thoughts filled with shapes and long drawn lines, I’ve been delving this last month into design and model work, developing ideas directly towards my next project, a piece due for completion in January… It’s time to fire up the burner and polish up them stakes – some exciting weeks to come in the Wighill workshop.

Open Studios in Wighill Park

Tomorrow I shall be opening up my workshop here in Wighill Park to give a glimpse into the world of silversmithing!
As part of North Yorkshire Open Studios 2011 I will be opening my workshop doors for these next two weekends in June. This is a great opportunity to discover the workings of traditional smithing, in particular at how I specialises in traditional hammerwork.
So please don’t hesitate – come and see me at work and join me for some tea and cake. Simply look out for the green signs to find your way!

Preview Evening!

What a great evening we had at Goldsmiths’ Hall last Thursday night! Had a fabulous time, with lots of unexpected faces turning up to show their support – many thanks to you all! I had some amazing comments coming my way and some great words of encouragement from the many guests who attended. It really was a hugely inspiring evening.
It was lovely seeing some of the other fellow makers of the show once again, while also meeting other makers for the first time. A huge thank you to Julie Chamberlain our curator who did a grand job – congratulations Jules! A warm thank you also to the many Goldsmiths’ people – it’s always an honour to exhibit at the Hall.
If you’re interested in silver of any kind, it’s a great show to see with great diversity of styles and objects and a fantastic selection of makers – I urge you to see it if you can!!

One to One Silversmithing Classes

Ah! What a wonderful place to give a class in silversmithing! A quiet little workshop on the water’s edge of west coast Scotland… nearing the end of March we were blessed with some gorgeous sunshine while undertaking a week’s one to one class.
A thoroughly enjoyable and fulfilling week – demonstrating various processes and ways of working metal, guiding the other person through exercises, watching them practice and succeed! Brilliant.
A great week with lots of fun – inspirational to both student and teacher.
